| AdminHistory | The Development Corporation was not responsible for the erection of schools in Livingston, this was the responsibility of the local authority (Midlothian County Council until 1975, then from 1975-1996 Lothian Regional Council). If the local authority deemed there was the need for a school in a particular area, they approached the Corporation and a plot was agreed. Sites for proposed schools were sold to Schools Authorities (usually Lothian Regional Council, but also including the Catholic Church, for example) at an independently assessed valuation by the District Valuer. The valuation was based on a market evaluation of the ground for housing purposes. If the site was disposed of as a school site then it was usually stipulated that it could not be developed as anything else without express permission of the Development Corporation.
The Corporation aided school authorities in planning for the amount of schools and school places that might be needed as the Corporation developed new areas of the town.
In initial planning the Corporation estimated it would need to build a new primary school every year, and a new secondary school every two years. |

Planning files contain general information on the provision of educational services in Livingston; including extracts of minutes of the Corporation board where education facilities were discussed; papers presented to the Board on educational provision; correspondence with Educational Authorities; maps, plans, internal memoranda and any other papers as necessary.
Architects files, in this series, generally consist of maps and plans passed to the Corporation showing the location and design of the school. In some instances, the opinions and advice of the Corporation was sought.
Administration generally contain correpsondence relating to minor issues, such as driveways, fencing etc; or can include correspondence from the school.
Engineering files are generally brief and refer to issues raised by the provision of services.
